Definition

A design approach that starts from the smallest screen and progressively enriches the interface for larger ones, instead of shrinking a desktop layout down. The small screen acts as a forcing function — not everything fits, so every element must earn its place — and that pruning discipline produces clearer hierarchy at every size. It matters most when the product will actually be used phone-in-hand, where desktop is the secondary case, not the default.
