Definition
A heatmap is a visualization that overlays user interaction density on an interface — clicks, cursor movement or scroll depth — using warm colors where activity concentrates and cool colors where it does not. Tools like Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity generate them by aggregating real sessions. It complements eye tracking: it does not measure gaze but it does measure action, at a fraction of the cost. Its value is turning aggregate behavior into visual evidence — whether users see what matters, where they stop scrolling, and which elements look clickable but are not.
