MAMP spins up a complete web stack on your computer without having to install and configure each piece separately. For testing a WordPress site, some PHP, or any dynamic site locally, it saves you the tedious part.
It's not for production or complex architectures (that's where you want containers), but as a quick testing environment it does the job. The Pro version adds conveniences, though the free one is usually enough.
